Threats and “consequences” are NEVER necessary. Using threats and “consequences” places the responsibility for conforming or complying on to the child, s we “have to” use those tools because otherwise “they won’t change their behavior.” The thing is, when children are under 5 or 6, it’s not up to them to change their behavior. It’s up to us, if we need something to happen, to change OUR behavior to help them through it, based on our observation of what is getting in their way. Compliance is not the goal.
